Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications was established in 2001 by telecommunications giant Ericsson and consumer electronics powerhouse Sony Corporation. The company is owned equally by Ericsson and Sony.

Sony Ericsson announced its first joint products in March 2002, and now has a product portfolio covering almost all target groups. The idea to combine the strengths of Sony and Ericsson, and strong consumer-focused strategy, make the company as one of the leading players in the mobile communications industry.

As a 2-3 year child, Sony ericsson dont has a lot of range of cell phones as Nokia. But its imprtant to say that Sony ericsson has succeded in making phones that still dont have any rival in the market. Sony ericsson cell phones are unique in their own look an functionality, these will be discussed in the Survey section of this article.

Smartphone Platform

Sony ericsson smartphone series worths discussing separately. It starts with Sony ericsson p800, p900 and now p910. It is based on Symbian UIQ platform. The difference between normal Symbian (platform for Nokia smartphones) and Symbian UIQ is that UIQ provides a high quality user interface for which touchscreen is the best example. A lot of input options in UIQ provide ease in handling, navigation and sharing. In my opinion, Sony ericsson p900 is still the leader of cell phone and smart phones, combining the true taste of a cell phone and a PDA.

Future Strategy

The new handsets announced and released depict the company's concentration towards the multimedia features. No doubt this is the hot issue nowadays and most of the cell phone companies are doing that. The company is also showing interest towards 3G or UMTS phones.

Survey and User Opinions

In this section i will provide you the conclusion of my Survey regarding SonyErcisson. Here is the summary of possitive and negative points of Sony ericsson.

People liked Sony ericsson cell phones because they are relatively cheap in price as compared to other cell phone vendors in terms of funtionality. Sony ericsson strategy of providing advanced features such as bluetooth, email, dictaphone etc. in normal cell phones is highly appreciated. Furthermore, a huge collection of accessories is heavily admired by people. Another major point is that Sony ericsson provides a lot of sharing options. Such as if you have a picture, sound, tone, note in your Sony ericsson cell phone, you can easily send it as MMS, E-mail, via IR, or via Bluetooth. For example, normally in Nokia, Samusung; you wont be able to send a picture to other cell phone via IR even if both of the cell phones have IR.

People who were not satisfied with Sony ericsson completely, said that, Sony ericsson cell phones are very slow in handling and navigation. And the wait time further increases when you start up or shut down your cell phone. This is the main negative point in most of the Sony ericsson cell phones. A group of people reported that Sony ericsson firmware dont has a long life, after a usage of a year, the cell phone starts to hang sometimes. While some people said that they dont buy Sony ericsson cell phones because their price go down so early and there is not that much resale value for Sony ericsson cell phones.
